This piece attempts to capture the feeling when you are online late at night. It is a TV show broadcasting at three am. It is eating an entire pint of ice cream on your own. These things are not good for you, but they distract us from the harsh sensation of failure that everyone in our capitalist society has made all too welcome in their lives. It's not a countercultural act, but one that exactly lines up with everything the technological world has made us. Perhaps then we crave the depressive state that we are in during these moments to counteract the barrage of pleasure we are forced to endure in the advent of constant convenience. Then perhaps our emotional turmoil is all that makes us human when all else is perfect.

LASIK

The idea of LASIK surgery is quite dystopian I think. Instead of wearing glasses, it is often more fashionable to use lasers to engrave our eyes into working right. Obviously, this is not to discount the societal good that has come of LASIK surgery. However I think there is something so inherently frightening and unnatural about the procedure itself, forcing a patient to keep their eye open as lasers carve at the eye cones. The broader idea of vision correction also contributes to a conformist attitude towards society, that there is a "proper way" for humans to percieve reality as it has been shaped by blinking lights and flashing colors. My friend Adam has confided in me about his fears of losing his vision over time. Over his life, he has witnessed his vision slowly deteriorate, which has given him a unique perspective as an artist, since he naturally values color and impressions rather than fine detail. Perhaps some time today, spend a moment to blur your eyes around familiar objects, and appreciate and understand the blobs of color that surround you.
